No one wants to admit it, but we're all well aware; Summer never lasts long enough. It's September 8th today, which leaves us with just about three weeks... wait no, that's just under two weeks until Summer is officially over! I'd better write this fast so I can get outside for one last swim/spend some more time in the hammock/pick some more blackberries/work on my tan/build that wood-fired hot tub I keep promising my wife.
See, there's just never enough time, but we've got to make the best of it. Another Covid summer made fully enjoying it a little challenging, but it just required a little thinking outside the box (or inside the Island, if you live here) to plan some memorable adventures.
My summer went pretty well, all things considered. The Natural Connection saw a good number of bookings through the past three months, but still not a full recovery on the tourism front around here, so I'm pleased to have seen any bookings! Thank you to those who joined me on the trail this season. I took a few camping trips to Sombrio beach, and spent three nights on Pachena Bay in Bamfield. Started a small scale farm in my new backyard with a 25'x25' garden, 20'x13' greenhouse & a Chicken Coop with 15 hens; which I built all from scratch, mostly with repurposed lumber because that stuff got crazy-expensive this summer. The garden has been supplying the greens for my wifes cafe since February, along with a few other things, and I stock a small farmstand at the driveway. My band played about 8 outdoor private parties, with a few more lined up for the fall; We're a Tragically Hip Tribute band called "Nautical Disaster". You'll have to look us up online to find out which part I play in that group. And, I started a new part-time job at a farm & garden supply store, which plays well into that backyard farm thing.
So as you can see, the bulk of my life has been outside for the past 3 months. Even as I write this blog post Im on my patio, looking over the little farm, listening to Osprey & Eagles calling as daylight fades on another summer day in Sooke. I still get my fair share of outside time through the rest of the year, but as daylight hours wane and storm season begins, its's just in our nature to huddle inside with a roaring fire or have a nice soak in a wood-fired hot tub! I better sign off and get to work....
