Mom would always worry about me when I took off to hike by myself when I was younger. Im sure she still does now, but just doesn't tell me... We go out hiking together sometimes, and she is warming up to the activity. Mud on the shoes don't bother her anymore, and she even invested in some decent hiking boots. We even hiked through Avatar Grove (in Port Renfrew) after dusk not too long ago! This has helped her understand how "safe" it really is on the trail, and she pushes the envelope by coming on more challenging trails each time. Today we went around Matheson Lake in Metchosin. Not an overly challenging or lengthy trail by my standards, but I guess Im pretty coordinated. There are quite a few rocks, roots, and drop-offs to negotiate, and she tackled them all with nary a curse word or regretful comment. Im always happy to share a new trail with someone, and even more so when its with someone close to me. There's lots of time to talk on the trail, even if its just between gasps for air as you push up a steep hill, and you get to share that sense of accomplishment with them.
If you've got a favourite trail, beach, or park that you hit quite often be sure to share it with those important people in your life. There's a reason you like that spot, and they will most likely enjoy it for the same reasons. If the important people in your life don't make enough time to enjoy the outdoors, get them outside! Theres's no better stress reliever than taking you pent up tension out for a strenuous hike, and leaving it there. Tackle that trail, summit that peak, run that extra Km, and get back out there to do it again and again! But don't forget to share.
